    Next Week in Ireland

Well, it’s been a strange feeling to have time move incredibly quickly yet seem to drag at the same time.  We have finally hit that time where we will be finalizing everything and getting on the plane soon.  We have been in contact with the pastor in Ireland and that all sounds good.  Hearing his voice reminds me forcefully of Africa…that accent and those mannerisms that are so very Ghanaian.  We are trying to tighten everything up at the church so people keep some momentum while we are gone.  Last night was really exciting.  We’ve been having some really wonderful praise and worship.  I had a strong vision of a meeting we had in Africa so many years ago.  It was way out in the outskirts of Accra, Ghana where there was a little bible training school for upcoming ministers.  We arrived late…an occurrence that isn’t rare because of what the Ghanaians call “African Time”.  The meeting was in full swing with them praising God with everything they had in them.  They were leaping as one…six hundred people leaping in a single mass.  The floor was dirt so that red African dirt was rising in a cloud that was at least waist high.  I have seldom been so moved at a sight in my entire life.  The grim note to this is that I am reminded of our dear driver and companion Ado.  He was just recovering from a terrible bout with malaria.  He was telling me what a wonderful football (soccer) player he was.  His charming smile and unforgettable face still is branded ever in my mind.  I remember him leaning out of the car window scolding someone that was hanging precariously from a bus near the car then he sheepishly turned to my mom and said “Oh, sorry mum”…as if we could understand him since he spoke in the local dialect which we didn’t know.  I hear his voice still…but now we found that he had died…not sure of the specifics…he was a young man who had married not too many years ago.  None of us will ever forget himAdo 1.  We will meet you on the other side my brotherAdo 2  .  It’s a sobering thing to go away from a place and know that when you return many of the things you grew familiar with have all changed.  People you’ve known have passed away…so much is different.  I can’t escape a sense of urgency to return to Africa.  All that we do seems to lead inevitably back to where we first started on the mission field.  Much tragedy has visited those we love so dearly but now we will meet with our friend Joseph Baise.  He says that I am American Joe and he is African Joe.  Our church is called Eagle Ministries International…he says that he is a black eagle…I smile at this but sense that he is seriously a part of us.  Destiny is drawing us back…I find it amazing that we are being drawn to where they say humanity started… the cradle of civilization…it is a return…it is a new beginning.

I have only one more post that I will make from this country since next Friday we leave for Ireland and Scotland.  How amazing that is to say!  I want to continue with the pictures I’ve got from our journey to Japan because we have a deep love for that country as well.  I will never forget that place either, I know we must return there as well.  Is it strange to you or is it just strange to me to visit China town in JapanIMG_1281 ?  I found it strange but fascinating as well.  What a tremendous entry to this section of TokyoIMG_1282 .  There are some amazing looking restaurants to witness and it does have a distinct Chinese edge to itIMG_1283 .  There are theme parks that I’ve seen trying to imitate being in other countries but there’s really nothing like really being thereIMG_1284 .  We very often saw groups of students wandering around…could they be playing hookyIMG_1285 ?  Gabby didn’t know what to think, poor little thing.  We went from store to store just to see the wonders of each little shopIMG_1287 .  Sometimes the outside of these places was as enchanting as the insideIMG_1288 .  Row upon row of exotic sights greeted our eyes as we walked on enjoying a beautiful dayIMG_1290 .  This dragon looked hungryIMG_1291 and I was too however my taste buds relish the challenge of a new dish more than the others in our team…maybe you can see whyIMG_1293 …burn ‘em up LOL!  Seeing lanterns like this in Walmart just isn’t the sameIMG_1295 .  It surprised me that the Japanese flag wasn’t displayed more prominently around the city but it looked proud on this shipIMG_1299 .  This was a wonderful harbor and portIMG_1301 , I can only imagine the goods that the ships bring inIMG_1303 .  Still the flowers grabbed my attentionIMG_1306 .  It was fall but you’d never guess by the weather and the plants growing everywhereIMG_1316 .  Ah, such delicate beautyIMG_1321 !  I wonder if the locals thought we were crazy taking pictures of it allIMG_1322 …well, I’ve seen the Japanese tourists in Yellowstone National Park…so I guess we’re even!  This ladybug seemed to be a rebel…not a spot to be seenIMG_1328 !  I know, I know, more flowersIMG_1329 .  These looked like they were puckering up for a kissIMG_1332 !  We brought the children to visit a school not far from my mother in law’s house…it was really interesting to visit the classrooms and see how school is there and then have our picture taken with a teacher from America and another teacher from the schoolIMG_1338 .  Here is Lovely, Gabby and I eating after a church meetingIMG_1340 .  One day we visited a small market to see the sights and hear the soundsIMG_1342.  It’s a whole new perspective on fish and sea food for this landlocked compadre, I can tell youIMG_1343  !  It was very early and people were busily shuffling about buying or selling their waresIMG_1345 .  There were fish I’d never even dreamed ofIMG_1346 .  Variety is the spice of life they sayIMG_1348 .  Well now, these things look a little likeIMG_1349 …uh, moving on…try not to think about it….  Where was I?  Ah yes, produceIMG_1354 !  Wonderful produceIMG_1358 IMG_1360 IMG_1361 IMG_1362 !  These just had too much personality to not photographIMG_1365 !  We spent tons of time just seeing what we could see.  Sometimes you take the shot other times it takes you and this one took my heart somehowIMG_1366 .  How could I not notice the manga?  My goodness I’ve never seen so many comic booksIMG_1367 !  I think this is one place I’d do just fine without a car…everyone walks, bikes or rides the trainIMG_1290 , IMG_1384 .  It’s not so bad once you get used to it.  Here are some kids we saw on the way home one nightIMG_1379 …just to cool don’t you think?  Here is my skeleton hiding in a sakura blossom shirtIMG_1380 …and here’s another blossomIMG_1381 .  What do you think?  You figure you live in a big cityIMG_1373 ?  This is not like where I liveIMG_1377 …but I still love it!

Ah, a visit to Shibuya…you will indeed get your eyes full hereIMG_1389 LOL!  What some ham?  I’ve seldom seen such a mass of people in my lifeIMG_1390 !  We went with our friends whom we had brought tee shirts to…they wanted to return the favor so here we wereIMG_1391 !  We found a wedding chapel which was pretty amazing in itselfIMG_1392 but more than that there was an actual wedding going onIMG_1393 !  We saw the family gatherIMG_1396 and the priests who officiated the weddingIMG_1403 !  Our friends didn’t quite share our enthusiasm but they were very patient and good to us as always…meet Hisau (don’t know how to spell that) and Hitomi and their two childrenIMG_1401 .  Finally we left the wedding behind, thankful for the chance to see itIMG_1404 IMG_1405 .  Back to the busy streets and people strange to my foreign eyeIMG_1407 IMG_1408 …notice the anime style dress?  I thought that sort of thing was only in Japanese cartoons!  This dog thought we were the weird ones thoughIMG_1410 .  It had been quite a day and it was time to go homeIMG_1421 IMG_1420 .  So much to see in this land of the rising sunIMG_1423 IMG_1425 IMG_1426 IMG_1427 but what made it the most wonderful for me is that God had done it and I got to experience it all with my family…including my little girl who seemed to enjoy every moment of itIMG_1414 !

All I can say about the end of this journey is you can be my tour guide anytime. You presented every aspect of what the country has to offer. The beauty you captured in your photos were everywhere. You did make the journey seem like on big theme park..
Take care my friend and may your journeys continue to take you down the road where God's wisdom and truth will be revealed. Hugs Carrie

I know a place is never what you remember and it will be all new in some ways, I am sure...especially experiencing this with your family!!! You will be in my prayers each day so know that as you travel!!!!
I will be moving to another home in the next couple of weeks...a huge change for my boys and I...good I am praying. Anyway many other changes are coming as well with school starting and the kids going to different schools. My 14 yr old will be a freshman and playing football...I have a feeling this will be a whirlwind!!!

    Good evening Joe…

Nope! You never want to be single. You are blessed…

I was just wondering the other day how soon it was until you head out. So God’s Spirit is already working on me for your trip. With your calling it only fitting that God has you on the road again.

We had some wonderful praise and worship this morning too…

We are on the same page recently reviewing our thoughts on those who have passed on too soon from this world. It’s like we are sometimes just cruising’ along and poof someone we know is gone or immediately suffering in a huge battle. Sometimes empathy overtakes me to pray and can only imagine how our Lord felt when He took on all our suffering or all our problems today. We sometimes forget about that because we are in His own image. Hmmm…That has me thinking to search in His Words.

No geoducks (pronounced…gooey ducks) or eel for me to eat.

You all be well and safe travels…Greg

My heart goes out to you regarding the loss of your friend. It's hard when things change and it must be especially hard when you are so far away from a place that you love. I was only in Domincan Republic for 1 month as a missionary and I feel that part of my heart was left there. I'm sure it's like that for you, even more so as the more time you spend there the more your heart is affected. My prayers are with you with this next journey. Have a good weekend. Take care, Lenore

I'm sorry my friend about Ado's passing. Things like that can shaken someone who has been gone for awhile. Places never seem to stay the same. Wonderful pictures and words here. I do hope you will be able to blog a tad while you are over there. I can feel your excitement and the day will arrive soon enough. Take care.

I am so sorry to hear about your friend. It is always tuff to lose them, even tho you know you'll see them again.

I, too, find it odd that there is a China town in Japan... it's almost an oxymoron... what a hoot life is!

Good luck, God Bless, and have a GREAT time!

Beautiful pictures Joe. I am waiting for the pictures from the other side of this big blue marble. I remember the school kids walking up slowly to us in the park in Gunsan, Korea when I was stationed there in the 70's. They would bow and ask politely if they could practice their English with us. They struggled with our different accents, but fun was had by all. Have a blessed trip my friend.
